FAO Summit - Fighting hunger without major
Editorial on Earth
Pietro Orsatti
They will be there. Despite the promises, despite the lukewarm commitments made at the G8 summit of L'Aquila. The "super" of the Earth, from Obama to Sarkozy, Merkel to the Brown, the FAO World Food Summit, which begins tomorrow, will not. Speaking of hunger, there will be only the hungry and the alleged "bad", the Qaddafi and Chavez, the Iranians and Koreans and so on. It's been less than two years after the large "grain crisis", from over two hundred thousand died of starvation in a few months that added to the already terrifying world's annual average. Two years after the riots in many countries in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Bread. It turned out, immediately, that the crisis was artificial, caused by financial speculation on the price of cereals, epicenter Chicago. Two hundred thousand deaths, riots, repression, conflict, and some few country destabilized by a handful of unscrupulous brokers. Not enough food and environmental crises caused by climate change (now UN, FAO, WFP and UNDP have linked the two issues closely without fear of being denied), it was not enough conflict and the desertification of whole areas of the planet to get the new gold Green, biofuels produced from crops intensive and destructive palm, rapeseed, sugar cane was not enough, the economic crisis and financial opened a long period of global recession. There was only the speculators of the Stock Exchange. The last of the FAO Food Summit ended with a stalemate, a statement is not binding on member countries, generic, which of course remained only on paper. Today we are again to Rome to rank reduced without the presence of those that count. And the UN agency was so aware that it appeals not to the leaders of rich nations, but to the citizens. Commitment asked every single citizen of the planet. To sign a petition to the great of the earth to commit themselves to finance an extraordinary program against hunger. Need, says the FAO, 44 billion dollars of development aid each year to address the food emergency, which affects roughly one fifth of world population. And concrete actions of development and equity and clear choices on 'Environment and climate change. And yet, the UN and FAO have come to launch it like any NGO and not as international agencies, a hunger strike. 24 hours. A strike which was joined also the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Only advertising, just a symbolic act, cheap demagoguery? Perhaps, but the signal is clear. Hunger is a problem of all and should be imposed on the agendas of various governments. This was the message on the eve of the summit in Rome, hoping that some "bad" or some gaffeur us not to distract attention from the topic of the day: the fight against world hunger.
